Said to be filmed in 1982 (I don't know if this date is correct), this film is about Shu Xiao-Zhi (played by Alan Tam), a boy who grew up in
a rich family who fells in love with a girl (Feng-Jiao) at first sight in an art gallery where his artist friend Huang-Gua has made him to go with him.

Huang-Gua helps him to find out more about this mysterious girl and get to know that her name is Shen Yun-Bai. Her parents died some years ago
and now she has to take care of her brother who's in hospital right now because of a broken leg.
Yu-Bai doesn't have any money and has to work very hard for her living. She has more than one job at the same time but doesn't complain at all!

Yun-Bai hates lazy people (just like Xiao-Zhi *lol*) so the boy (totally in love) wants to play a trick on
the "Girl without sorrow" (that's how his friend is calling her because she never looks unhappy). He pretends that he is a poor artist!
His friend is helping him by painting some beautiful portraits of Yun-Bai so that Xiao-Zhi can tell her that HE has painted them...

In the meantime Yun-Bai gets a proposal of the hospital's doctor who is promising her a carefree life but also explains that he isn't really
in love with her. He just wants to have a wife to take care of her as he doesn't have time for a real family life anyway, so he also can marry her
because she's a wonderful woman... (doesn't this sound familiar?! *lol*)

Xiao-Zhi's rich parents wonder why their son isn't coming home every night and why he's dressed so funny the last few days.
Xiao-Zhi isn't ready to tell them the whole truth but he admits to them that he has a girlfriend who's poor and works very hard for her money...
His mother (played by Kwei Ya-Lei, aka "Lady Rose" in Jackie Chan's "Miracles") is sceptical to hear that but his father likes to hear that Xiao-Zhi
is going out with such a capable girl...

When Yun-Bai finds out that Xiao-Zhi doesn't have a girlfriend she starts to search for the perfect girl for him. Of course HE isn't quite happy with this
action but she really makes him to go out with some of her friends. Every date ends in a desaster...
Finally he tells her that she is the only woman on his mind.... Yun-Bai doesn't know how to react to this confession.

Because Xiao-Zhi wants to know if Yun-Bai also loves HIM he's playing another trick on her! He and his sister start flirting with each other
when Yun-Bai is with him (she doesn't know that the girl is his sister). After some minutes of an embarrassing show Yun-Bai is running away in anger!
Xiao-Zhi is happy because Yun-Bai really showed that she cares a lot for him! He's following her to apologize...

Everything seems to be going great. Yun-Bai really is in love with him, and even the doctor isn't in their way any longer because
finally he notices that he has an affection for his nurse (who was in love with him ALL the time).
But when will Xiao-Zhi tell Yun-Bai the truth?!

He doesn't have to. While Yun-Bai is at work in a bar she sees Xiao-Zhi and his sister together!
She thinks that he is cheating her and for the first time since her parents' death she's crying!
She even had started to earn money for HIM to go to study abroad... she had done everything for him...
and now she finds out that he was only playing with her.

Step by step she gets to know the "real" truth and is even more angry with him (well, who wouldn't be, right?)
She leaves the city (as her brother can leave the hospital anyway) and wants to forget the last few weeks.

Xiao-Zhi tells his family about the whole story and they decide to bring this wonderful girl back! They are following her track
and finally find her in the country side with her brother. Well, the movie has a happy end of course.;-)
Yun-Bai tells Xiao-Zhi that he has to get know him for a second time before she can love him again...
The movie continues 2 years later: Xiao-Zhi has started to paint to be liked by Yun-Bai. She thinks this is stupid and that this won't change him
as a person. She loves him as he is... well, Xiao-Zhi STILL wants to get a painter now. *lol*
And the movie ends with a little cute teasing between the two :)

Jewel's comment:

A really enjoyable movie!! Sadly there's no Alan Tam song as far as I remember but the story is funny and makes a lot of fun to watch! :)
In this movie there are many important characters which makes the movie even more interesting.
Great screwball comedy from Hong Kong (but filmed in Mandarin)! Two thumbs up!! :)
